Cluster

A cluster refers to a computer network of syndetic servers. A cluster infrastructure is required for availability respectively high availability.

Cluster infrastructure
The simple form of a cluster is known as active/passive. That means, all services run only on one node, in case of a failure the (passive) node is switched on and the services keep on running there.

High availability cluster
High availability clusters, also called HA clusters, are used to increase the availability respectively for more system stability. HA clusters are composed of minimum two nodes and they are active /active. That means on all cluster nodes run all services. If one server fails, the services keep on running on the other server without any interruption, therefore availability is not affected. The hardware as well as the software of a HA cluster has to be free of single point of failures (components, which could break down the whole systems due to a failure). Such HA cluster are used in critical environments, in which maximum downtime of some minutes per year is permitted.

Data center mirroring
Within disaster scenarios critical IT systems have to be secured. Therefore the cluster nodes respectively an identical cluster is placed in different data center often some kilometers away. The data is mirrored between the data centers. In case of a catastrophe the node respectively the cluster in the not affected data center can take over the whole load. Thus high availability is guaranteed.
